Ten Reasons Why

Ten Reasons Why Many Young LDS Adults Are Lost

One of my responsibilities as a high councilor was working with the Young Single Adults (YSAs), who were not attending or whose records were not in a YSA ward. Many of these YSAs were referred to as ‘the lost single adults,’ meaning they were not active church members.

But I will use the term ‘lost’ in a different sense, as in ‘lost’ like the description Lehi used to describe those who “did lose their way, and wandered off and were lost” (1 Nephi 8:23). These, like many YSAs, commenced in a path which led to the tree of life, but because there arose a “mist of darkness; yea, an exceedingly great darkness,” they lost their way.

This also may apply to many of the church who are not YSAs even though they may be ‘active’ church members, for regardless of activity they may still be ‘lost’ in this sense.

I use the term 'way' as Nephi does in 2 Nephi 31 as having entered in by the gate "which is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost" (2 Nephi 31:17).

The 'way' as described by Nephi is the "strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life" (2 Nephi 31:18). Nephi explains that we get into this strait and narrow path "by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save" (2 Nephi 31:19). Once on the path we "must press forward feasting upon the words of Christ" (2 Nephi 31:20).

Unfortunately many YSAs have lost their way, or more likely have never found their way. And even though they were baptized, they did not actually enter the gate to the strait and narrow path because they were not taught to “understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, when eight years old” (D&C 68:23). They may have been taught about these doctrines, but not taught to understand them by those who were given charge to teach them the gospel of Jesus Christ according to the word of God.

Or if they were taught to ‘understand’ they did not continue to feast upon the words of Christ or did not hearken unto the voice of the Lord, but instead they have gone according to their own carnal wills and desires and persisted in their own carnal nature. As such they refuse to repent and therefore it is as though there was no redemption made. He extended His arms of mercy towards them, but they would not. (Mosiah 16:1;5 & 12). Fortunately for all of us as long as we are in this probationary state we can repent. It is always the failure to repent that is the basis upon which we are judged.

So they 'commenced' by being baptized but because they were not taught to 'understand' they were in darkness to begin with. The Lord defines darkness as anything which is not the light that comes from God. If we are not introduced to His light, or if we are introduced and then turn away from that light, or are not continually immersed in that light, we will become lost because of the darkness that does prevail in this world.

God describes this light as His word, which He also defines as truth and Spirit, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ. (D&C 84:45). The only remedy to the darkness is the word of God, which is why we are admonished to 'feast' upon His words. We either live by this light, by every word that comes from the mouth of God, or we do not. There is darkness all around us and within us, and the only way to navigate the darkness is to see the light shining in the darkness and follow it.

I have always been interested in why, and in this case have listed ten (10) reasons why I believe young single adults, as well as many other older church members, who may have commenced in the path, eventually lose their way. This includes those who may have never found their way, and those who mistakenly believe they are in the way,

Each reason for being 'lost' is accompanied by a short explanation of the truth (word of God) associated with each reason. I use the term 'understanding' the way the Lord used it when He explained to his disciples why He taught in parables, "because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand" (Matthew 13:13). He explains why they don't hear or understand, "for this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed" (Matthew 13:15), and they do not understand with their hearts (Mosiah 11:29).

Being 'lost' is not the result of all these reasons. In fact it can be only one or perhaps another I did not think of, but since they are all connected, failure in one results in failure in the others. But they do all have the same thing in common--they are not understood, believed, experienced, and known, as in known by personal revelation, which is the Lord's answer to self-deception.

On another occasion the Lord cautioned us that "the whole world lieth in sin, and groaneth under darkness and under the bondage of sin" (D&C 84:49). This darkness, He explains, is the result of "not being acquainted with (His) voice" (D&C 84:52). The problem of not understanding is compounded by the fact that many of those charged with teaching YSAs did not themselves understand and therefore contributed to the lack of understanding among the lost YSAs. But with becoming an adult, these YSAs cannot afford to pass the responsibility to those charged with teaching them. Having been introduced to His words (the Parable of the Sower), it is up to them to search them and feast upon them and see and hear and understand.

Note that each of the reasons listed is based on a lack of understanding the revealed word of God, either because of not being taught properly, having no desire, not searching, and not planting the word of God in their hearts because in their hearts they desire the things of the world, or knowing and rejecting the word of God. All of this is explained in the Parable of the Sower.

1. They do not understand the fall of Adam, nor have they experienced their own lost and fallen state. In other words they do not know where they are. In order for GPS or a map to be of any benefit, it (or you) must know where you are. There is a proper order for teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it begins with Adam. “Because that Adam fell, we are; and by his fall came death; and we are made partakers of misery and woe. Behold Satan hath come among the children of men, and tempteth them to worship him; and men have become carnal, sensual, and devilish, and are shut out from the presence of God” (Moses 6:48-49).

This is the condition of all of us, and how we respond to this condition determines our eternal destiny. It makes no difference whether we believe this or do not believe it--the truth is that all of us are lost and fallen--all you have to do is see that we all die, we all partake of misery, we are all flawed human beings, and we are not in the presence of God. Like others before them many lost YSAs will simply dismiss this as being part of a religion, but their dismissal does not change the fact that it is true and that their lack of response is a response based on either not understanding or refusing to hear and understand.

2. They do not understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words they do not know how to read the map, and hence they wander off and are lost. Alma recognized that his son Corianton's behavior was the result of Corianton not understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Alma's response to his son's behavior was to teach him the word of God, which, by the way, is the map! Many do not know that Christ defines His Gospel in 3 Nephi 27:13-21. While Moses 6:48-49 describes our condition on this earth, Jesus gives us His preferred response to our condition. Both put everyone who has lived and will live on this earth, in the play. We are the actors in the play, but many do not know the plot, the beginning or the end. But Christ tells us that He came to this earth (good news) because His Father sent him. He tells us 'why' His Father sent Him--to be lifted up on the cross so that all men and women would be lifted up by the Father to stand before Christ and His Father to be judged of their works. This tells us that all of us must stand in the presence of God "to be judged of him according to the truth and holiness which is in him" (2 Nephi 2:10). This is the good news but only if we repent.

He tells us that we can avoid the judgment of God of our works if we repent, are baptized, are filled with the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end, and instead of the justice of God, we can be found 'guiltless' because of His goodness and righteousness. Otherwise we suffer the justice of God and are hewn down and cast into the fire. The YSAs that are lost may know nothing of the real Gospel of Jesus Christ. Instead they may see the church as just another religion and make life decisions based on what they 'think' is best for themselves rather than what God 'knows' is best for them, thereby subjecting themselves to the justice of God.

3. They do not understand their need for an atonement. In other words, not only do they not know where they are, they do not know where they are going, and even if they have an idea, they do not know how to get there. Knowing something about the atonement and experiencing our personal need for the atonement are not the same. I would guess that most YSAs, like many of their parents and teachers, may not have experienced their own lost and fallen condition, and therefore do not see the need for their own redemption. Until we see and experience that we are sinners, that we are evil, that our goodness is flawed, that our works and deeds will never be enough, that our capacity to sin needs to be changed, we can deceive ourselves and be led 'carefully down to hell.'

Redemption is a personal experience, not a doctrine to be read from the pulpit, and we are redeemed because of the righteousness of our Savior. It is OK to think that we are lost as long as we also experience our own need for Christ's redemption, in fact without the former, we will never desire the latter. For this reason I believe that many YSAs who have made different choices may not see a way out for themselves, and therefore become locked into a worldview that captures them and keeps them out of the way, on paths that lead them further away from the truth.

4. They do not believe that they have only two choices and that they are enticed by the one or the other. In other words they do not understand that God has engineered His plan so that we only have two choices--Good or the righteousness of God, or Evil, which is everything else. One direction is narrow and the other one is broad with many paths all leading one to be lost, wandering in strange roads. While we have many choices on how to live our lives, all these choices are but a reflection of whether we are choosing Good or Evil. Young people believe that when they become adults they are 'free' to make their own choices. While this may be true, what they fail to comprehend is that as adults their choices remain the same. They can either turn to Good or God or they can turn away from God and turn to evil.

Belief in the doctrine of the two ways is lacking in those who have lost their way.  Having chosen to turn away from God they are now in the midst of darkness, and Satan who entices them away from God deceives them with images, illusions and false ideas to keep them out of the way. They are led away without even realizing it and are taken captive and led carefully down to hell.

5. They do not understand either the Justice or the Mercy of God. In other words they do not understand the consequences of their choices. What bothered Corianton was that he could not understand how a loving God could punish us. In Alma's explanation to Corianton he taught that the Justice of God comes about because of the fall of Adam. By Adam's fall comes death, misery and woe, and flawed humans being cut off from God's presence. Why? Because God said so and being God He could not go back on His word. Having put His Justice in place, there then came a need for Mercy.

The Mercy of God became available to us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Justice and Mercy are on opposite sides of the equation.  We choose one or the other.  It is not justice and mercy, but justice or mercy. Having put these conditions upon us, God sent messengers to teach us that we can avoid His justice and be found guiltless (mercy) by keeping His commandments to repent, be baptized, be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost and endure to the end (3 Nephi 27:20). Justice claims all that are hers, and Mercy claims all that are hers. Christ stands between us and mercy and none but the truly penitent shall receive mercy (Alma 42:24). "Thou hast turned away thy judgments because of thy Son" (Alma 33:13).

All of us sin and will continue to sin, but if we repent (using only His definition of repentance--see Reason 7) we can be found spotless when we are brought to stand before God to be judged. But if we fail to repent, then it is for us the justice of God and we will be judged of our works, regardless of whether they are good or bad. "And thus mercy can satisfy the demands of justice, and encircles them in the arms of safety, while he that exercises no faith unto repentance is exposed to the whole law of the demands of justice; therefore only unto him that has faith unto repentance is brought about the great and eternal plan of redemption" (Alma 34:16 emphasis added).

6. They believe that because consequences are not immediate, there are no consequences.  Many young people buy into the mantra to "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us" (2 Nephi 28:7). Part of the reason for buying in is that there are usually no immediate consequences to their actions. But this will not always be so because each choice is laying the groundwork for the consequences. Satan's tools include pacifying and lulling into a sense of carnal security, flattering and telling us there is no hell, and leading us carefully down to hell.

Because we only have two choices--good or evil--every day, every minute and every second we are revealing to God what we want by virtue of the choices we make, and He will use our choices as the basis of His judgment. It is called the Judgment because it is where all of us will stand be be judged. We will either be judged on our own merits, or on the merits of Christ.

7. They do not understand the doctrine of baptism or repentance. In other words they do not know the gate by which they enter into the strait and narrow way. Because so many YSAs have been taught about repentance by people who themselves do not understand the Lord's meaning of repentance, they may associate repentance as something negative, i.e., I am a bad person and need to repent. Yet repentance is one of the greatest of all the gifts of God, given to us as the means for us to take advantage of the mercy of God, and as the way out of our being shut off from the presence of God. To many YSAs the way back may seem too difficult and too demeaning, and yet having been baptized unto repentance, the Lord has told them to turn to Him, put their faith in Him, and rely wholly upon His merits.

He has told us that we are saved because of His righteousness, not our own. All we need to do is repent which means to turn to him, recognize that our hearts are broken and pray for new ones so that He can begin to change our disposition to do evil and cure our tendency to turn away from Him. We then begin to see the fruits of our repentance. Our sins should trouble us, but with a trouble that will bring us down unto repentance. We should not endeavor to excuse ourselves in the least point because of our sins, by denying the justice of God, but we should let the justice of God and His mercy, and His long-suffering have full sway in our hearts; and let it bring us down to the dust in humility (Alma 42:30).

What better news than this:  "And I also thank my God, yea, my great God, that he hath granted unto us that we might repent of these things, and also that he hath forgiven us of those our many sins...which we have committed, and taken away the guilt from our hearts, through the merits of his Son" (Alma 24:10 emphasis added).

8. They do not come unto Christ because they do not believe Him or His words. Or in other words they do not understand or believe that Christ has spoken the words of his Father. While giving lip service to a belief in Christ, many lost YSAs do not really believe Him or His words. We begin with the premise that God has spoken, that

His words have been recorded and that we can know for ourselves that they are His words.

This admonition by Nephi applies to all of us: "all ye ends of the earth, hearken unto these words and believe in Christ; and if ye believe not in these words believe in Christ. And if ye shall believe in Christ ye will believe these words, for they are the words of Christ, and he hath given them unto me; and they teach all men that they should do good. And if they are not the words of Christ, judge ye--for Christ will show you, with power and great glory, that they are his words, at the last day; and you and I shall stand face to face before his bar; and ye shall know that I have been commanded of him to write these things" (2 Nephi 33:10-11).

Evidence of this is that once YSAs leave the church many abandon their worship of God and/or Christ altogether. A quote from Tamu Smith, one of the Sistas in Zion makes this observation about those who leave the Church: "What I've noticed from brothers and sisters of our faith who have left is they don't replace their Sunday worship with anything.... They become unbelievers." I would say that perhaps they were never believers in the first place.

9. They are deceived by the images of the world and the vain imaginations of their hearts. Christ has contrasted His words with what he describes as the 'mainspring of all corruption' which is the creeds of the fathers that have been strongly riveted upon the hearts of the children and have filled the world with confusion.  He describes this mainspring of corruption as growing stronger and stronger and that the whole earth groans under the weight of its iniquity (D&C 123:7).

Satan does have power in this world, which is by design so that we are enticed by the one (Christ) or the other (Satan). There is no middle ground--no ground for people to deceive themselves into thinking that they are good, even though some of their deeds are not, and that at the judgment God will take care of those bad things we did because He loves us and will usher us into His presence. Satan is a master magician and with the use of images and illusion, will deceive us or, better yet, cause us to deceive ourselves.

10. They do not put their trust in God. I am always amazed at the influence of others in the lives of the lost YSAs, or more amazed that these young adults can be so trusting of their peers. Our Father in Heaven has asked us to put our trust in Him. He does this to protect us. He does not want us to put trust in humans, any humans. This is usually the cause of finding fault with church leaders and parents and finding excuses to transfer our trust to our friends. God knows that it is our tendency to rely on those around us more than we do on Him, and after He warns us not to, we may find ourselves disappointed and even worse, critical.

This disappointment and criticism then leads to finding fault and blaming the church. This is just other evidence that these lost YSAs do not understand the Gospel and mistake the organization as the Gospel. In this they usually have company--those around them--who reinforce their mistaken ideas. How many quotes from others have been posted on social media sites as some great truth, while at the same time they ignore or discount what He has revealed. One word from Him strikes everything else into insignificance. And yet they are blinded by the craftiness of men and do not hear and do not see, and therefore do not understand.

Taken together these teachings are there to be either received or rejected, and our response to them determines whether we start our ascension to God or continue our descent further into Babylon, to be destroyed when Babylon and everything in it is destroyed.

There is only one remedy for helping this 'lost' generation to find their way, and that is for those closest to them to first do what they will ask of these lost YSAs--feast upon the words of Christ, for the words of Christ will tell you all things that ye must do. And once armed with these words, they like Alma must preach unto them the word of God with all diligence, and teach them the Gospel of Jesus Christ the way it should have been taught to them in the first place! We can't rely on the programs of the Church to do this. It can only be done one-on-one by those who become like Alma and are willing to labor without ceasing that they might bring souls unto repentance so that these lost YSAs do know of the things of which you speak, as you should know; and the knowledge which you should have is of God. Go get that knowledge and then begin your labor!

And for any YSAs who may read this, remember that you are at risk because most of you have been introduced to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His commandment to repent or turn to Him while turning away from the darkness within and around you. You cannot rely on your failure to understand to excuse you from the command to repent. You have actually been baptized and entered at least partially into the strait and narrow way. I urge you to turn to the light and begin to feast upon the words of Christ, for these words will tell you all things you must do.

Letter To My Grandchildren

To My Grandchildren, Their Spouses and Their Children

(And to all the Sister Missionaries and young adult ward members who have visited us in Verdun.)

Why is this letter necessary? So that you are prepared for the prophesied events yet to happen prior to the Lord's coming, so you will be guided by His words and not be deceived.

At one time in my life, I wanted to be the type of grandfather who could provide you with opportunities for fun and adventure. I wanted to spend time with you, take you on trips, provide reunions where we could all gather and have good food and create memories together.

But there came a time in my life when I realized I could not be that type of grandfather. There were several reasons including my divorce and new marriage, there being so many of you, and not being able to afford these kinds of opportunities. But at some point in my life I also realized that perhaps while fun and memorable, these type of activities were not the greatest good I could do for you. I am aware that I have been the type of Grandfather who was present in your lives when you were younger, and not so much as you got older, but that does not mean I am not aware of what is going on in your lives, or that I do not care, because I do.

I know you may not be mindful of me, but I am mindful of each of you. I am curious about you, worry about you, but most of all I love you. And I have felt His love for you. Because I love you, I share God's gifts to me with you. He has promised me that someday some of you will recognize that the gifts of the Spirit given to me, were given to benefit you, and that you will rejoice in Him who is the giver of these gifts. And that when you think of me, you will remember that "...in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things...." (D&C 59:21). And I pray that all things will work together for your good.

And so I asked myself what would be the greatest good that I could do for you? Many experiences led me to desire and discover this greatest good, but what could I do that would cause you to want to know of and understand why Christ is the greatest good, or why Jake in his homecoming talk said 'it is all about Christ?' I worry that you may reject the messenger, and therefore not receive the message. Resist the urge to opine on what you think the greatest good is, and continue to read and discover what He means by the greatest good.

I have found the greatest of all treasures, the treasures of heaven, and I want to share these treasures with you. But like any treasures they only become yours if you discover them. If you allow me I can help you do just that. I've done the searching and the digging, have found the treasures, and continue to enjoy them. But rather than trying to explain to you why they are the treasures of heaven, perhaps you can just continue reading.

But, you may ask, why would you even want to hear about the treasures of heaven and about Christ from me? Probably not any more than Corianton wanted to be taught by his father Alma. Or you may think you already know all you need to know. But you don't! Not even close! I am now an old man with more treasures than you can imagine.

I don't have these treasures just because I am old, but because I have spent years searching for and finding these treasures. I gave up long ago seeking for earthly or worldy treasures, but instead spent my time seeking for the treasures of heaven. And my Father in Heaven opened up to me His treasure chest. He has revealed to me personally the truthfulness of all that He has revealed to others. He has given me gifts of the Spirit, and also the Spirit of Revelation and the Spirit of Prophecy.

Knowing that in the Father and Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, I am sharing just a few treasures and cautions in this letter. So read this as coming from someone who loves you and who knows treasures and how to find them. Hopefully you will discover some treasures you can take with you and share. Pour mes petits-enfants français, I recommend that you first read Is It A Good Seed?, try the experiment, and then come back to this letter.

Some of my treasures are prophecies of events leading up to the Lord’s second coming.² Much is yet to happen before Christ comes again, yet being unprepared and unaware of the events leading up to His coming will catch you on the wrong side of His words when the irrevocable division spoken of by Nephi, Isaiah and Christ occurs.

Because I am older I can see tragedy coming from a considerable distance, but when you are young tragedy does not seem to pertain to you and certainly never catches up to you. But a tragedy it will be if you do not heed His words. The world and its systems can capture us and become all that we know and experience.³

There may be some of you who believe that all you have to do is follow the prophet. Some may know that we must look to God and live, and not follow and put our trust in a man, no matter his ecclesiastical title. Some of you may be struggling with the organized Church. And there may be some of you who are wondering if you really believe in God. And others of you (my French grandchildren) who have not been taught at all because your parents and grandparents were not taught and did not know the truth.

This message is for all of you because no matter where you are in your journey, the remedy is the same.

One of my greatest treasures is knowing the Lord's definition of truth. Yes, He has told us what truth is:

The word of the

Lord is truth, and

Whatsoever is truth is light

(light can be discerned), and

Whatsoever is light is spirit,

Even the spirit of Jesus Christ

(D&C 84:45).

Truth = Light = Spirit = Jesus Christ

So His words are Him! If you want to draw nearer to God, feast upon His words. If you do, I promise you that you will hear His voice in His words!

There you have it! A standard by which we can judge and compare everything! Can you appreciate how important this is? Can you appreciate that you do not have to believe anything that is not true, no matter who says it? Can you imagine that you should believe His words, no matter who says them? It is not me saying this. No one but God could say this.

You are not bound by creeds, talks from the pulpit, handbooks, lesson materials, or even what your parents taught you. Can you imagine that one word from the mouth of the Savior, from the bosom of eternity, strikes everything else as insignificant

This is the reason He has caused His words to be recorded, and we should listen to those who speak and teach His words, no matter who says them, even if it is just your grandfather.

This said, there is only one focus and that is, to feast upon His words so that you will have His sword of truth and can cut through all the crap. And His words will tell you 'all things you must do.' I cannot emphasize enough how important this is as we are nearing the time when Christ will come again. There is so much to happen between now and then, and it is all spelled out for us in His words. You do not want to be caught unprepared.

Sadly I must confess that I taught my children what I had been taught. You see, the traditional teachings are not light and truth (D&C 93:39-40), and I failed to teach them light and truth as the Lord commanded me. Only His words are light and truth.

I did not teach them, as commanded (D&C 68:25), to understand the doctrine of faith, baptism and repentance, before they were eight years old. But I could not teach what I did not know and had not yet experienced. I taught what I had been taught: to be good, to be active in the church, to do my duty, or, in other words, to be religious.

It is preferable to be under grace and not under the law. Some of you may believe that repentance is a change of behavior. It is not! It is a change of direction. Repentance means to turn to Christ, put our faith in Him and rely alone upon His merits.

It is only because of His words that we enter into His way, and only because of His words that we continue in the way. Faith comes only by hearing the word of God. It then follows that because of our faith in Christ we have access to His grace.

It was only after I had feasted upon and obtained His words, and then heard His voice in His words as He revealed the truth of His words to me, experienced being redeemed and born again, that I could teach them to others, but with mixed results. I say mixed, because so few understand or desire to understand the language of God, but some desired to and have experienced His words and His Spirit. This was my motivation for writing a blog, so that perhaps I could remedy the traditional teachings with light and truth and share them with you and others.

I worry that you, like me, may have been taught only the traditional gospel, rather than the gospel of Jesus Christ. Some of you may be struggling with the organized church, with religion in general, perhaps going through a destruction of what you have been taught. There is a lot to struggle with.

Others of you may believe that all you have to do is "live the Gospel." Some may think that Conference talks are the word of God, but to assume so, without knowing the word of God could find you on the wrong side of God's words. And some of you may be questioning the Book of Mormon.

There is so much noise out there that it is impossible not to hear it, read about it or see it. Some of it is valid, but it is usually delivered without any remedy, and it is the remedy that I want to emphasize.

Some of you may have already left the church because you no longer believe some or all of its teachings. Remember that belief is irrelevant. It is not what we believe or do not believe that matters, but whether something is true or not true. That is always the question--the only question. Do not assume that just because you believe something, that it is true. On the other hand do not assume that just because you do not believe something, that it is not true! Remember it is not what we believe that matters, but who we believe.

Christ does, however, invite us to leave the fold and follow Him to living waters and green pastures. And by 'leaving the fold' I mean leaving behind religion and coming to Christ, looking to Him and relying totally upon His merits and not upon any of our own merits. It will be because of His righteousness that you will be redeemed, not your own.

But those who leave without the Shepherd to guide them, are more than foolhardy; they put themselves in peril.

Those who stay and 'practice' their religion are equally at risk, having failed to repent because they have not been taught what Christ teaches about repentance, thinking that by their good works they will have earned His salvation, or perhaps that Christ will make up the difference. Annie and I choose to stay involved because we love the people. It is where we can do the greatest good by bringing our brothers and sisters to Christ. We also can witness to God directly that we want to take upon us His name and always remember Him, when we partake of the sacrament.

There is only one remedy--His words, and believe me when I tell you, you will not always find His words coming from the pulpit, even the pulpit at the Conference Center. Talks should not be your only source. You must first find His words as they are recorded in the Old and New Testament, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. Only then will you be equipped to know the difference between the message and the messenger, and will know when the word of God is taught.

Always remember that the Book of Mormon is a work so staggering that it may risk challenging to call it the most remarkable achievement of the human mind--that is, if Joseph Smith was not telling the truth about its origin! Add the truthfulness of its origin, and you can see the hand of God and can hear His voice in His words in the book.

It was not until He began revealing to me the truthfulness of His words, that I came to know His words.

Truth without personal revelation is just information. Truth with personal revelation is to know the truth. I want you to know as I know, and the knowledge that I have is from God, and for that reason I stand as a witness of God.

All His words come together in Christ, and Christ will always lead us to His Father. Christ only taught His father's words (John 12:46-50), and sent the Holy Ghost to bring all His words to our remembrance (John 14:46).

God's more or less principle as described by Alma in Alma 12:10-11 teaches that we are either receiving more of His words until we know the mysteries of God in full, or we harden our hearts against His words until we know nothing, and are bound by the chains of hell. It is either or.

His words can be and are transfigured. In fact, Moroni and Nephi and others prophesied that we, His latter-day people, would transfigure His words, that we would teach for doctrine the commandments of men mingled with scripture, and that many would be led astray because of this.

Christ himself prophesied that it will be so bad that we will reject His words and the fulness of His gospel, and that His gospel will be taken from us, and we will become as the salt of the earth that loses its savor (3 Nephi 16:10;15).

If you were to ask now what is this greatest good, I would direct you to the Lord’s answer. Joseph's ministry was to proclaim Christ's Gospel, and in doing so “will do the greatest good,” and will “promote the glory of him who is your Lord” (D&C 81:3-4 emphasis added). Don’t assume that you know ‘Christ's gospel’ because I can guarantee that you more than likely do not. If you are interested He has defined His Gospel in 3 Nephi 27:13-21.

This letter from a German soldier from Verdun written in May 1916 is an illustration of the greatest good.

My dear good old parents,

It's war here, war in the most horrible of all its forms, and in our distress we become aware of the closeness of God. At present, things are becoming extremely difficult. But in the depths of my soul, I feel serene rather than worried. "Let me go so that I can see Jesus." It must be beautiful to be able to look at God in His magnificence. I think about the afterlife a great deal, with joy. I do not fear judgement. I'm a poor creature, a miserable sinner, but how great is God's grace, how great the Saviour's love! This is why, without fear or distress, I am doing my duty for the Fatherland and for my love of the German people. Thank you, my dear parents, for leading me to the Saviour. It is the best thing that you have ever done!

With my tenderest love, May God keep you! (Johannes Hass. Died at Verdun on 1 June 1916)

God's words have now become my words because He has given them to me. Those of you who are feasting upon His words will recognize them, but those of you who are not, will not recognize them because you have no frame of reference except the pulpit narrative or the opinions of others. Believe me, the scripture narrative is different than the pulpit narrative. Or better yet believe Him when He says:

“And I, Jesus Christ, your Lord and your God, have spoken it, These words are not of men nor of man, but of me; wherefore, you shall testify they are of me and not of man; for it is my voice which speaketh them unto you; for they are given by my Spirit unto you, and by my power you can read them one to another; and save it were by my power you could not have them. Wherefore, you can testify that you have heard my voice, and know my words” (D&C 18:33-36).

To “follow” Jesus (Matthew 10:38; 16:24; 19:21) thus looks far beyond being “saved” to becoming even as He is (3 Nephi 27:27).*

And I can so testify!

So if you are inclined for whatever reason--curious, to prove me wrong, really want to know, really need to know, or any other reason--then search what I have written. Compare everything with His words. Look up the references and desire more of His words. As you receive His words, pray for the Spirit of Revelation and the Spirit of Prophecy, and know for yourselves. Then, as He promised, you will speak with the tongue of angels. Do not be part of the majority that will deny the gifts and power of God (Moroni 10), because only those who work through the gifts and power of God will do good.

I have linked a few posts here for easy reference, hoping that there may be a few that will interest you, and help you focus on His words and not mine. It is His voice that I want you to hear in His words.

I send this because I love you and because I want you to desire and choose His mercy, and avoid His justice.

There is an upside to ignorance, and a downside to knowledge. Knowledge makes life messier. It makes it a bit more difficult for a person who wishes to shrink the world to his or her worldview.

Love,

Your grandfather.

Deny Not The Gifts of God

As I have searched Moroni 10 and scriptural links to Moroni 10, I am impressed with the vision Moroni had with respect to the idea that perhaps in our day we would 'deny the gifts of God.'

Why else would he be so bold, in his last written words, to 'exhort' us to not deny the gifts and power of God, and to do so with so much fervor, and ending his words with one of the most powerful exhortations in all of scripture? He was so concerned that he emphasized his exhortations over and over again. But as with many Book of Mormon prophet writers, he was right on, since we have not heeded his warning and do in fact, for the most part, deny the gifts and power of God.

Let's look at what he says:

"I would exhort you that

¹ye deny not the power of God

for he worketh by power,

according to the faith

of the children of men....

And again, I exhort you,

my brethren, that

²ye deny not the gifts of God

for they are many; and

they come from the same God....

and they ³are given by the

manifestations of the Spirit of God

unto men, ⁴to profit them

(Moroni 10:7-8 emphasis added).

Moroni then enumerates several of the Gifts of the Spirit, and then writes:

"And ⁵all these gifts

come by the Spirit of Christ...

and I would exhort you,

my beloved brethren,

that ye remember

that ⁶every good gift

cometh of Christ

And I would exhort you,

my beloved brethren,

that he is the same

yesterday, today, and forever,

and that all these gifts

of which I have spoken,

which are spiritual,

never will be done away,

even as long as the

world shall stand,

only according to the

unbelief of the

children of men

(Moroni 10:18-19 emphasis added).

Moroni's heartfelt plea is further emphasized in verse 25 where he says, "that if the day cometh that the power and gifts of God shall be done away among you, it shall be because of unbelief" (Moroni 10:25 emphasis added).

We can link 'unbelief' to another scripture speaking of us in D&C 84:54-55, where the Lord tells Joseph that our "minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because (we) have treated lightly the things (we) have received--which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation" (emphasis added).

So is Moroni's exhortation directed

at us?

Based on my experience as an active church member for all of my life, and as one who has served as, and worked with many others at ward and stake levels, I can say that for the most part we have and do "deny the gifts of God.' One reason, I believe, for denying the gifts of God stems from pride: we are simply unwilling to admit that others may have Gifts, that we don't have. This is especially true of ecclesiastical leaders who think that because of their callings they should be the ones with the gifts. And yet they should be the ones "discerning the gifts" among us (D&C 46:27).

Not once have I ever been asked by a Bishop, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader or Stake President if I have any Gifts of the Spirit, and I believe that to be true of most people. Nor did I ever inquire of any of my ward members when I was a Bishop, and this is true of many bishops whom I have asked. I did once as Bishop invite someone outside our ward to speak in a Sacrament Meeting. But it was only later, after receiving more of God's words, that I recognized his ability to teach the word of God as a gift of the Spirit.

As I was taught more by the Lord about His gifts of the spirit I tried to bring up spiritual gifts in meetings, ward councils and high councils, in an attempt to call attention to Moroni's exhortation to not deny the Gifts of God, and to seek out ward and stake members who had spiritual gifts.

My exhortation always seemed to fall on deaf ears. As a ward Executive Secretary I once persuaded my Bishop to make a list of all the gifts of the Spirit in our ward. He made a start, but became focused on other more traditional ward matters and nothing came of it.

I do not say this to be critical but to simply point out the fact that Moroni's concerns about us were well founded and prophetic, at least based on my experience. Spiritual gifts as real gifts are not on our radar, not even when we have a lesson on gifts.

I was even told once that we should not talk to others of our spiritual gifts, and could never understand this since these gifts are given to 'profit' all of us, and as a result we should know of and share our gifts with this caution:

"Make not thy gift known unto any save it be those who are of thy faith. Trifle not with sacred things" (D&C 6:10 emphasis added). Also Paul says, speaking of spiritual gifts, "seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church" (1 Corinthians 14:12 emphasis added).

"For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift" (D&C 88:33). And I would add that what doth it profit them if a gift is bestowed upon others, even a family member, and they receive not the gift? Behold, they rejoice not in that which is given unto others (for their benefit), neither rejoice in Him who is the giver of the gift.

He has given me certain gifts of the Spirit: the gift of the word of knowledge, the gift to teach the word of God, the gift of faith, the gift of healing, and the gift of prophecy, including the Spirit of Revelation and the Spirit of Prophecy. I do not view these gifts as mine, and do not share them to call attention to myself, but rather to the Giver of these gifts

And only very rarely has anyone recognized these gifts of the Spirit given to me. Not even my family, except my wife Annie. I am grateful for those who have, because they rejoice in the gifts and the Giver of these gifts. However, these who recognize His gifts to me, will know right away if I ever take credit for these gifts. But they also know that gifts of the Spirit enable those with these gifts not just to say, but to show by the power of God.

It doesn't mean I haven't utilized these gifts because I have and do every chance I get. I rejoice in these gifts to me, and the gifts He has given to others that I know. I rejoice in Him who has, through personal revelation, given these gifts to me, and led me to many others with multiple gifts of the Spirit. For me or others to deny these gifts is to deny the power of God.

My experience with lessons on the Gifts of the Spirit have always consisted of 'talking about' but never really understanding how denying the Gifts of God is also denying the power of God, and directly correlates to our lack of faith and our unbelief. Other than occasionally identifying a few of the gifts in Moroni 10, D&C 46 and 1 Corinthians 12 in lessons, I have never been instructed in family or church, nor did I instruct my children, on the importance of spiritual gifts in our pursuit to do good, and to recognize how He defines His gifts.

Before I continue, let me write something about what 'good' is and how it is tied to the use of the Gifts of the Spirit. Moroni teaches us that "in Christ there should come every good thing" and "all things which are good cometh of Christ" (Moroni 7:22;24 emphasis added). He also tells us that only by faith can we lay hold upon every good thing (Moroni 7:25). So if we are to be the means of doing 'good' we can only do 'good' through Christ. Our own goodness just does not cut it and no amount of human goodness amounts to doing the type of 'good' Moroni is writing of.

No one has ever taught me, as far as I can remember, except God through Moroni and other Book of Mormon prophet writers, that we can only do 'good' through the gifts and power of God. This blog is one of my attempts to teach my children what I failed to teach them. I did not, when they were young, follow the Lord's instructions in the D&C 68 and 93, and Moses 6 on teaching our children.

And how does He define good?

"For behold, my brethern, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night. ...I will show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ.... But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil..." (Moroni 7:15-17 emphasis added).

Could we say this another way: everything which is sent forth by the power and gifts of God, persuadeth to believe in Christ, and serve God?

In other words this doesn't mean just giving lip service to our belief in Christ, as in they draw near me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Why are our hearts far from Him? Because, while we cry unto God, our hearts are set upon the things of the world.

Moroni warns us that if the gifts of God are done way among us because of unbelief--

"there shall be none

that doeth good

among you,

no not one

(Moroni 10:25 emphasis added).

None! "No not one!" Incredible how clear this is! Incredible how it is ignored!

This connection between good and the gifts of God is of critical importance, and lays at our feet the warning given to us by Moroni, and begs the question: how much 'good' are we really doing if we are not doing good through the power and gifts of God?  According to Moroni, NONE. To me this is staggering.

And he makes this crystal clear when he says:

"For if there be one

among you

that doeth good,

he shall work

by the power

and gifts of God

(Moroni 10:25 emphasis added).

Doing good = Persuading others

To do what?

To believe in Christ and serve God

How?

By the power and gifts of God!

For emphasis Moroni warns that

"I speak it according

to the words of Christ

and I lie not"

(Moroni 10:26).

And he doesn't leave it at that!  He says:

"I exhort you

to remember

these things

(these words)

for the time

speedily cometh

that ye shall know

that I lie not

for ye shall see me

at the bar of God;

and the Lord God

will say unto you:

Did I not declare

my words unto you

which were written

by this man...

I declare these things

unto the fulfilling

of the prophesies?

(Moroni 10:27-28 emphasis added)

Is Moroni prophesying that we will deny the power and gifts of God? The answer is yes. We don't have to look far (ourselves) to see that we have denied the gifts and power of God, and continue to do so. I certainly did when I was ignorant of God's words. Maybe we don't deny all the gifts, such as the gift of healing, but we do deny most of them and do not seek out nor "discern" those who have gifts, so that the gifts of God can be used to benefit the whole. I am sure the Church uses people with the gift of tongues to translate Books of Mormon and other Church publications. But how about you?

Let me illustrate by asking you six questions.

1. Who do you know in your family, your ward, your stake, or beyond, that has the gift of the Spirit to teach God's wisdom, or to teach the word of God?

2. Do you know any friend, neighbor or family member who has the gift of healing, the gift of great faith, or the gift of prophecy?

3. And if you do, have you ever asked them to use their gifts for your benefit? Your family's benefit? Your class's benefit? Your ward's benefit? Your stake's benefit?

4. Do you put more emphasis on talents than on the gifts of God?

5. Have you ever sought out someone with the gift of knowledge to teach you and your family?

6. How can you do 'good' if you do not know what 'good' means and do not work by the power and gifts of God?

I know many who have gifts of the Spirit, and I have benefited from God's gifts to them because I have desired the benefit and He has led me to them.

My plea to whomever reads this, is

to become aware of Moroni's exhortation, seek out gifts and encourage others to ask for gifts. Rejoice in the gifts and He who is the giver of the gifts. This is especially critical, as the end draws near, concerning the gifts of wisdom and knowledge and the gift to teach wisdom and/or knowledge; or the gift of prophecy, and others, or what I call the forgotten gifts. By doing so we can tap into His power and actually do Good.

I would like to illustrate one way that we deny the power and gifts of God, while being deluded into thinking that we are doing good. We seek to counsel in our own ways and rely on human wisdom and talents to solve problems. We seek 'not the Lord's counsel," and we ignore God's word and the power it has in getting people in the way and keeping them there (D&C 1:19; 56:14; 2 Nephi 31).

Think about a typical ward council meeting where the Bishopric, quorum and auxiliary leaders gather to counsel. Someone may be assigned a 'spiritual thought' and then an agenda is followed where ward issues are discussed. More often than not (in fact in my experience with ward councils--never) the welfare of the soul is not considered. The welfare of the person is, but the solutions are a result of handbooks, traditions, talents, and members of the council conversing among themselves.

We deny the power of God in these councils because we ignore those with gifts of the spirit. We treat lightly both the gifts of God and the word of God which as Alma says, if used (and if used by someone with the gift of knowledge) will do more good than anything else. As a result no good is done even though we pretend it is.

We are also warned to "Deny not the spirit of revelation, nor the spirit of prophecy, for wo unto him that denieth these things" (D&C 11:25).

It does not need to be this way and shouldn't be. The sword of truth (the word of God) should be foremost in our councils, and if it isn't then we may help a few members with some problems, but we won't bring them to Christ. See Ten Reasons Why for an example of what happens when we don't use His words.

We must remember that our work is to teach His words. [why?] To bring others to repentance? [why?] So that they may obtain the mercy of God (Alma 42:31). And we must use the gifts of the Spirit. "Verily I say unto you, he that is ordained of me and sent forth to preach the word of truth by the Comforter, in the Spirit of truth, doth he preach it by the Spirit of truth or some other way? And if it be by some other way it is not of God" (D&C 50:17-18 emphasis added).

Otherwise we deny the gifts and power of God and will not do Good, which is to use His gifts to persuade others to believe in Christ.
